Town Meeting Power of Play Fee: Free
What is the significance of play in fostering values and expectations that support
achievement?
In 1946 Dr Kenneth B Clark and, Mamie Phipps Clark founded the Northside Center
for Child Development in Harlem. There with the assistance of other psychologists and
social workers and researchers they created the" first full time guidance" service
center for Black Children the creation of the center was fueled by Dr. Mamie Phipps
Clark's Master's thesis, which introduced the results of the "Doll Test".
In 1954, Dr. Kenneth B. Clark presented those findings in Brown v. Board of Education
of Topeka Kansas: the landmark Supreme Court decision that ruled public school
segregation unconstitutional. Rev, Dayan M. Johnson worked as a research Associate
for Dr. Kenneth B. Clark during the 1970's and prepared expert statistical data for
desegregation cases and Affirmative Action Programs
.
Fast forward to the Fall of 2005 Kiri Davis a seventeen year old High school student
recreates the doll test and films a documentary of her findings. Little has changed!!
Where do we go from here?
What as a collector can you do to implement change?
What will we as parents, consumers and collectors require from manufactures, retailers
and artists to insure change happens?
Our panel will reflect on the findings and we will all develop a positive plan of
action.
